Competitor Messaging Analysis

Claude

Reverse-engineers competitor positioning and messaging into a gap map and a differentiation angle.

Overview

The Competitor Messaging Analysis skill is a custom Claude skill built to analyze competitor websites and surface exactly how they're positioning themselves, their messaging angles, proof points, and differentiation strategy. Instead of manually reading through competitor sites and trying to piece together their strategy, this skill researches and extracts actionable messaging intelligence you can use directly in ads, landing pages, and positioning work. It's built for competitive awareness that leads to action, not just a summary of what competitors say, but a clear map of where you can win.

The problem it solves

  • It's hard to objectively read a competitor's messaging without a structured approach
  • Manually comparing multiple competitor sites to find patterns takes time
  • Without gap analysis, it's easy to copy a saturated angle instead of finding a real differentiator
  • Messaging research often stops at "here's what they say" instead of "here's what you should do differently"

What it’s designed to handle

AreaWhat it covers
Positioning analysisIdentifies how each competitor positions itself in the market
Messaging anglesExtracts the core messaging themes and hooks competitors use
Proof pointsSurfaces the evidence/credibility elements competitors lean on (stats, case studies, testimonials)
Differentiation strategyAnalyzes how competitors try to stand out from others in the space
Gap mappingIdentifies messaging gaps and angles you can exploit
Saturation mappingFlags overused angles to avoid so you don't blend in
Own-site comparisonCan compare your own website against competitors to show where you stand

How it works

  1. Provide the URLs. Share one or more competitor website URLs. Optionally include your own website for a direct comparison.
  2. Skill researches each site. Using web search, the skill studies each competitor's messaging, positioning, and proof points across their site.
  3. Messaging intelligence is extracted. Core positioning, messaging angles, differentiation claims, and proof points are pulled out and organized per competitor.
  4. Gaps and saturation are mapped. The skill identifies which angles are overused across competitors (avoid these) and which are missing entirely (opportunities to claim).
  5. You get an actionable teardown insights structured to be usable directly in ad copy, landing pages, and positioning strategy, not just descriptive notes.

Example walkthrough

Input: "Analyze these 3 competitor sites and tell me how I should differentiate: [URL 1], [URL 2], [URL 3], here's my site too: [my URL]"
  • Positioning summary per competitor
  • Shared/saturated messaging angles across all three
  • Gaps none of them are addressing
  • Where your own site currently stands in comparison
  • Suggested differentiation angle based on the gaps found
